We began our day in the Outer Banks with a visit to Grave Digger's home in Poplar Branch.
Inside Digger's Dungeon
Caden wanted to make sure that the driver's suit was in the picture as well :-)
Several of the trucks were on property that day but others were still in route from Las Vegas where the World Finals had occurred a couple of weeks before.
The original Grave Digger was a mud truck
After seeing the trucks, we stopped in at Digger's Diner where the boys had lunch
After lunch, they got to walk around the petting zoo that was on site
One of the goats really liked Ethan!
This peacock was SO cool!
At lunch, both boys got Grave Digger frisbees to toss around while they played near the petting zoo
Ethan's frisbee took a wrong turn and landed on top of one of the buildings. When Caden asked one of the engine guys that Ben had been talking to for help on behalf of his brother, he called out to a friend walking toward the shops at the back of the property. The guy turned around and happily climbed on top of the building to find Ethan's frisbee and toss it back down to him. As we said thank you, the boys started talking to him and it was none other than Grave Digger driver, Morgan Kane!!! This picture was one of the highlights of the trip!
When we said our goodbyes, I saw this tag next to where we were standing :-)
After leaving Poplar Branch, we drove to Kittyhawk where Ben and I had some North Carolina BBQ for lunch, then we headed over to one of the piers. It was a bit cool and windy on the beach!
Once we left the beach, we drove a few miles further to Kill Devil Hills, the home of the Wright Brothers first flight, and checked out the memorial there. The memorial is at the top of a large flat field. The brothers built the flyer on the field and drug it to the top of the hill for each experimental flight. They got a GREAT work out each time!
Finally reaching the top!
The view of the field from the top of the memorial where the flights took off
There were 4 flights the day that history was made. This sign describes how the flights happened and there is a stone monument at the spot where each flight ended that describes the distance flown, pilot, and length of each flight
The stone placed where the 4th flight ended
Daddy explaining history to the boys from the field
The Wright Brothers spent so much time working on the flyer that they finally built and moved into a shed right there on the land
As you circle the base of the monument, there is a bronze model of the Wright Flyer. Our little people are on the end of each wing
Then Daddy got in the shot, too :-)
These were very popular throughout the week!
We had a fantastic day in the Outer Banks! After leaving, we headed over to Casey and Jesse's to eat dinner with them before going back to Morgan's to get a good night's sleep before our big day in DC!
